A little background:
Electronic cigarettes, also known as vapor cigarettes or E cigarettes are becoming more and more widespread as an
alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes. The electronic cigarette functions like a vaporizer in which a
combination of nicotine (except when purchased without nicotine), liquid filler such as propelyne glycol or
vegatable glycerin, and flavoring are put in a small cartridge which resembles the filter of a cigarette. This
peice is called the cartridge or cartomizer. The second part of the e cigarette is the battery which is a
rechargeable battery in which the cartomizer screws on to. These two combinations make up the e cigarette.
In a nutshell, there are basically two sides to the e cigarette safety debate: Those that question whether or not
electronic cigarettes are safe, and those who feel that it is a much better option than to continue smoking regular
So Are Electronic Cigarettes Safe
The arguments agains e cig safety are most commonly as follows:
* Not approved by the FDA as regulated smoking cessation program
* Still contains nicotine
* May contain other chemicals which could be harmful
* Not enough studies to provide strong evidence of safety
* May entice children to start using nicotine

Among other arguements...
Those for electronic cigarettes usually argue:
* No tar
* No carcinogens (or atleast significantly less, depending on the source)
* They claim to feel better and have more energy
* NO 2nd-hand smoke
* No house fires
* No smell - much less intrusive
* A MUCH healthier alternative to smoking
Now it can't be denied that nicotine is addictive, thus vapor cigarettes are also addictive. But where the
controversy stands is how dangerous is nicotine by itself. What we do know is that nicotine raises blood pressure,
but this is NOT the cancer causing agent in cigarettes. Nicotine, like other drugs has a variety of side-effects
and can be used in lethal doses, however using chewing tabacco or the misuse of gums or patches are much more
likely to cause such negative affects.
It's also important to mention that electronic cigarettes do NOT produce smoke. Instead what is seen being
exhaled is a benign (completely safe to others) vapor.
There has also been a lot of debate over how safe propelyne glycol is, how much of it is actually in e cigs and the
fact it can be found in antifreeze solutions. What many people do not know is that this substance is in a plethora
of things we eat and use everyday.
Moreover, thousands upon thousands of people world-wide have used the e cigarette as a method of quitting and have
attested to it working phenominally.
It's also important to keep in mind that the FDA may be biased as they do not have financial control (as with the
pharmacuetical companies) over this product which would be likely to make them very nervous.
The Author's Stance - Are Electronic Cigarettes Safe?
As an ex-smoker, I have been a large advocate of the electronic cigarette. Since using them for just over a year, I
can attest that I feel better, have more energy, cough a lot less, get sick less and seem to have a lot less
physical issues. I can also say that my family & friends are all for the change. No more ashtrays, no more
burns, no more chances of fire. I enjoy not having bad breath or smelling bad. Weighing out the pros and cons I
have found that using vapor cigarettes have DRAMATICALLY improved my quality of
